(1.)What is the state of education in the Chicago area?
Apparently the education standards for Chicago area students is pretty low. Many children can not do basic math in their head or on paper. Many can not read and write and many can not think critically. Many of our children in todays modern education are doing horribly at reading, writing, math science etc.(according to test scores) As much as 54% of Chicago area juniors do not meet basic language standards. Similar numbers can be found in other areas of study.
Reading : 50.6% below standards(2013, so it went down a little bit but still pretty bad)
Mathematics : 48.3% below standards
Science : 55.3% below standards
Overall average of 51.4%
Why are the schools the way they are?
Simple the parents, teachers, adults, faculty are all failing them. Yep. It's not the students fault for the most part. It's still hard to believe that a society can blame the youth for adopting behaviors that they couldn't have learned anywhere else except from their adult counterparts.
1. Centralized government controlled anything has been proven to be a failure. When a particular system is controlled by only a handful of people it tends to hire under qualified workers, waste money, not go for the most efficient means of getting work done, funds end up going into peoples personal accounts instead of going to the supplies needed and the people that work there becoming complacent, defiant and selfish. Worrying more about their pension instead of their job performance. Why? They don't have any incentive. In a free market system workers of all types have to push themselves in terms of efficiency and productivity. The greater value they bring to their work the more they might get paid. The more they get paid the more they save thereby raising their capital. In a government controlled system where a certain amount of pay is guaranteed. Isn't any wonder that there has always been more attention paid to student performance rather than the teachers performance.
2. Chicago teachers are some of the most overpaid teachers in the country. As long as they teach something, anything, in any class they get giant salary and even bigger pensions. People who work for the government in some sort of way have much greater guarantees of higher pay, pensions and lesser threat of losing their job. Because of this many don't feel like they have to work hard to keep their job. They than perform very badly but because they are paid buy our tax dollars they don't have to worry about being fired any time soon if at all.
3. As you all know Chicago is set to have on of the biggest school closures ever performed in history. Why are they closing? Because there is either not enough enrollment, very bad "test" scores, not enough of the students graduating or all of the above. Tax funded education creates a destructive environment of entitled, overpaid bullies(teachers), siphoned off funds, a police/prison state for the students who then fail, get passed along and have no real skills to excel in life. We then blame the students for their failure when it was the adults who actually failed the kids. When one looks closely at so called Chicago area education. All one really sees is a world of authoritarianism and destruction. Where blame is placed on the victims and not the perpetrators.
4. This has been stated before and shall be stated again. Too much of Chicago schooling depends on test taking and test scores. Schools have been known to have their funding adjusted depending on test scores of the students in the school. Which means students are increasingly pressured to pass tests rather than actually learn anything. This is unfair to their ability to think and or gain knowledge. And only proves yet again that tax funded schooling is only good for the government workers(teachers) and horrible for the students.
