Black History Month: Where are all the Black libertarians?

For years people have been asking, "Where are all the female libertarians?"

The Libertarian News Examiner has been answering that question since 2008, most recently in 'Voluntaryist vixens' video interview invites visitors.

Now, especially since February is Black History Month, it's time to ask "Where are all the Black libertarians?"

While Black libertarians are scattered throughout the blogosphere here is a quick survey of Facebook pages that present libertarianism from the African American viewpoint.

With 102 members at this writing Black Libertarians is an Open Group that identifies strongly with individualism and self responsibility, declaring its allegiance to the non-aggression principle by proclaiming "The libertarian way is a caring, people-centered approach to politics."

If that doesn't get the message across, the unidentified founders of this site also display this Ayn Rand quote on their "About" page:

"The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities."

A new site, Launched January 23, 2013, African American Libertarians sports the subtitle "Liberty, the New Dream" beneath an image of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Beyond 63 likes (at this writing) and a few photos there's no further history, basic facts, contact info, ownership data, or background material to tell us about this site's values, beliefs or philosophical thrust. Is it anti-Obama, Republican leaning, Libertarian Party supporting, voluntaryist advocating, anarchist promoting, or just freedom encouraging in general?

Already a Facebook favorite with over 1450 likes and counting, African Americans for Libertarianism was created in September 2012 by Rashad A. Turner who leaves no mystery about its mission.

"I created this page in order to spread Anarchism, Voluntaryism, and Libertarianism in the Black community," Turner writes on his "About" page.

He then scolds Black people who "seem to overwhelmingly support the Democrats (where the Jim Crow laws came from and the KKK)" and who also think that "the Republican party is only filled with racists."

"There are liberty minded politicians in both parties," Turner continues without offering any mention of the Libertarian Party, "but both parties are in reality in favor of the State."

"I am just trying to spread freedom, liberty, and self sufficiency," he concludes.

All of these African American Facebook pages deserve to become big in the near future, supported by all libertarians of every type, stripe and color.
