Get involved in commemorating Black History month with some awesome activities at local libraries in the Greater Newark community. Maplewood Library (just 25 minutes outside of Newark) is hosting a whole month of activities and events. It is not too late to get in on some of the action. The best part? It is geared towards the whole family. Activities are interactive and educational. Check out some of the programs going on and make it a point to attend. All programs take place in Maplewood either at Hilton Branch Library [phone: 973-762-1688] on 1688 Springfield Ave. (just a short bus (#25) ride up from Newark) or Maplewood Memorial Main Library on 51 Baker Street [973-762-1622]. Below you will find a list of upcoming events for the week ahead.
- Thursday, February 23rd--- the Hilton Branch will be hosting Games and Music in Black History for children in grades 1-5. This will take place at 4pm and pre-registration is required. Call the number above. In addition to that, at 6:30pm a local librarian will lead a book discussion on African American fiction and its influences. This is for ages 18 and up.
- Friday, February 24th---the Main Library will host a Teens Read to Kids storytime. Children in grades 6 and up will have the opportunity to dazzle younger children with stories and picture books by or about Black Americans. Teens pre-register in Teen Zone and arrive by 3pm. Storytime will begin at 3:30pm.
- Saturday, February 25th---come join a celebration of Black History for the whole family featuring some local notables. Drummer Cedric Miller and jazz vocalist Dwight West, among others, will pay tribute through words and music. Location: Main Library
Last but certainly not least, looking ahead to the following week, take a joyful trip down history lane with opera singer Lori Mirabal as she helps us to celebrate Marian Anderson’s birthday. Don’t know exactly who these ladies are? Come and find out on Monday, February 27th at 7pm! Open to ages 5 and up. Location: Main Library.
