In celebration of Black History Month a month when we recognize the contributions that African Americans’ have made to this country. Black History Month began as “Negro History Week” by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926. We celebrate the contributions of those who fought to end slavery, to establish civil rights and the continued struggles that African Americans face today.
While not created in the United States, one of the best spirits to come out of the African continent is Amarula from South Africa.. Amarula is similar to irish cream that you would find in America, but this liqueur is South Africas favorite.

Amarula is a best seller in South Africa and has had success in the United States, by winning a gold medal at the 2006 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The spirit is made with sugar, cream and the fruit of the African Marula Tree which is colloquially referred to as the “Elephant Tree” because of the elephants’ affection for the fruit.
February is Black History month as well as National Cherry month in the United States, so what better two ingredients to marry and come up with a cocktail.
This creamy cocktail, that we are going to be making uses South Africa's favorite liqueur and fresh cherries. An Amarula Tease is a great cocktail for dessert after a meal, or by itself to satisfy your sweet tooth.
Ingredients:
- 2-3 tsp cherry puree
- 2 oz Amarula Cream
- 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream
How to make:
- Add ingredients into blender and blend until smooth.
- If you would like the cocktail thicker, add more vanilla ice cream ¼ cup at a time.
- Serve in a Champagne Flute
- Garnish with a mint leaf
