Black Friday 2008 remembered - Wal-Mart open 24/7, OSHA alert-take care out there

Black Friday 2008 had a death toll of five.  A temporary employee at a Wal-Mart in NY was trampled to death in a literal doorbuster where the hinges were taken off of the door, a woman in NY suffered a miscarriage, and two shoppers shot it out in a ToysRUs.  Again in NY, a mall worker was killer, and several more shoppers injured, and in Missouri, it was a mow down of two in a parking lot.

Shopping can be hazardous to your health, especially if you are a retail worker.  So hazardous, in fact, that OSHA has just published a fact sheet giving crowd management safety tips for retailers.  Tips read like a pandemic response, highlighting the use of barriers and first responders.

In this economy, it is very smart to try to get the best deal possible.  On the day after Thanksgiving, where we all should be giving thanks for living in one of the most prosperous countries in the world, and we should be behaving as if we live in a civilized country.  Before you set the alarm for 2:00 am, please take a moment and realize that lives may be on the line.

Stay healthy, and shop happy, whether it's a Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target, Kmart, Macy's or JC Penney's. Oh- and if you live in Alabama make sure you are back in time for the big Alabama-Auburn Iron Bowl game, maybe you can even watch it on the new big screen you just scored at best Buy if you were lucky enough to get a ticket that let you in the store.
