Black College Expressions, Inc. was started in 2009 by CJ Nelldell as a result of first and secondhand degradation and belittlement of black college education as well as, others with similar educational backgrounds while in corporate America. The vision for BCE was birthed with the powerful catch phrase “Real Talent Comes From HBCUs”™; a catch phrase that resonated in his soul when he saw the fallacious work-product of one of his “majority” school counterparts which were issuing the belittling comments.
“I am a very expressive individual, and I was always told by my peers when faced (directly or indirectly) with social injustice, not to “stoop” to the level of the culprits issuing such injustice. I always asked “why must we always be so passive?” I was taught, you can say whatever you want to say, but the effectiveness of what you say lies in how you say it,” says Nelldell.
BCE’s products give the members of its audience a means to express their innermost feelings visually without being labeled as a “disturbed individual” had their expression been vocal. BCE customers, who are current and prospective students, graduates of, and diehard fans/supporters of HBCUs, are able to express themselves and wear a strong, quality brand at an affordable price. BCE also prides itself on supporting the sustained legacy of black colleges. BCE is currently writing a proposal as part of its “Doing Well by Doing Good” campaign, to raise funds to help keep the doors of one of the HBCU institutions of higher education open.
