The debut of “Black Box” on ABC might have viewers wondering if another medical drama series is needed. While some people might suggest there are more than enough hospital shows on air, after watching the first episode it might be essential to squeeze one more hour into the TV schedule as this show is riveting with a brilliant performance by Kelly Reilly who plays the lead character, Dr. Catherine Black. According to the Providence Journal on Thursday, the show is ABC’s brainy new medical drama and it offers up a look at a medical doctor who has a big secret.
Dr. Catherine Black is a world famous neurologist and at the top of her game. Each week, she attempts to unravel the mysteries of the brain while hiding her own secret. The show offers viewers a chance to see the human side of medicine. Fans soon learn she is hiding that she is bipolar.
Dr. Black's home is in New York City. She works as the medical director of a state-of-the-art neurological center known as "The Cube." Patients from all over the world come seeking help from this woman and the stories of life are shared with viewers. However Dr. Black keeps many secrets from her family and collegues. Apparently she only trusts her psychiatrist, Dr. Helen Hartramph with the truth (who is played by Vanessa Redgrave).
On the debut episode “Kiss the Sky” Dr. Catherine Black reveals to her therapist Dr. Hartramph that she's feeling at the top of her game. Communicating with patients on a different level has given the doctor a chance to connect and do better in her field. It’s also making her bi-polar symptoms more and more difficult to control. Working to balance the two, she also has some pressure at home as Catherine’s boyfriend is pressuring her to marry him.
The series premiere of “Black Box” airs Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. The inner tug of war that Dr. Catherine Black faces is must-see TV for any fan who likes medical shows.
