Once a week, the African-American Books Examiner will search the blogosphere for posts about African-American books, writing or publishing. Here are this week's five picks.
1.) Shon Bacon aka ChickLitGurrl has posted an interview with novelist Bernice McFadden as well as a repost of her review of McFadden's book Sugar in honor of its 10th year in publication. From that post:
(Q)What themes do you find yourself constantly drawn to- why?
(A) I write about women. I guess I am drawn to their stories because I come from a family of women. Strong, fighting, cussing, supremely intelligent women who live their lives on their terms. I'm enamored with them and I am also keenly aware of the sacrifices they made for the generations that were coming up behind them. And so I pay homage to them the best way I know how - I write their stories. (Read full interview here.)
In addition, McFadden shares with Bacon that her latest book, Glorious, is scheduled for release in May from Akashic Books.
2.) Reads4Pleasure educates with her Author of the Month. This month's she's chosen J. California Cooper, author of multiple novels including Life is Short but Wide. Read more at Reads for Pleasure blog.
3.) At RawSistaz's Reader Rack blog, which hosts regular book chats, readers discuss the book The Ideal Wife by Jacquelin Thomas. This discussion represents the culmination of the site's holiday reading challenge. If you're curious about the other books on the list, read selection names here. The first book was Push by Sapphire, which has been covered here at the African-American Books Examiner before.
4.) At the Urban Book Source, Delonya Conyers reviews the novel You, Me & He by Brooke Green, a novel about a couple dealing with one partner being on the down-low as a bisexual.
5.) As mentioned at one of Carleen Brice's blogs, Michael E. Ross at The Root interviews Charles Johnson, author of Middle Passage, which is being turned into a graphic novel. Like speculative fiction author Octavia Butler, Johnson is also a winner of the Mac Arthur Foundation Genius Award.
