Black & White was the standard for film photography for many years before affordable color film became available.
Many of the wonderful images created in Black & White around 1900 have been lost but the Field Museum of Chicago has been adding a great variety to their collection on Flickr recently.
One of my favorites is today's photograph of the American Black Bear taken in 1900 at the Lincoln Park Zoo. This was originally a 4x5 glass negative according to the Field Museum's records.
The incredible detail of the 4x5 is evident in this scanned image.
Be sure to check out the Illinois Urban Landscapes Project from the Field Museum also.
