BK fashion weekend celebrates its 15th season, which kicks off this week Feb. 28 and runs through March 3. It serves as a platform for emerging designers from around the world in Brooklyn. The show takes place in Brooklyn NY at Industry city Bush Terminal which has a historical significance for New York City and helped establish Brooklyn as a major seaport destination on the Brooklyn waterfront. It was constructed by Irving T. Bush starting in 1895, the site expanded to be the largest multi-tenant industrial property in the United States. Bush Terminal operated through 1974 and was renamed Industry City in the mid-1980s it is dedicated to preserving Bush Terminal’s industrial heritage and innovative spirit while providing a destination where 21st century businesses can prosper.
Brooklyn fashion weekend was started in 2006 by non-profit organization Brooklyn style foundation serving as a platform for Brooklyn’s explosive creative talent. Its mission is to assist emerging, underprivileged designers in honing their talent and growing their business, and to provide a professional forum to showcase their creations alongside other emerging designers. Brooklyn fashion weekend has emerged as a powerful new showcase for fashion talent on the verge of stardom.
BK fashion weekend is responsible for providing a platform for some ground breaking design talent; Edwing DAngelo (USA), Jay Wilson and Gavin Douglas, Das Komitee (Germany), Terri Steven (Project runway contestant) alongside Brooklyn’s own Joan Vaccianna, Alisha Trimbles, Samyo Lenko and Denisha White and our students’ designers form Maxwell Williams High School. BKFW was excited to showcase some designers with amazing careers Loris Doran and Nana Boateng, to give inspiration to our emerging designers. This year theme “ Honor The Masters Celebrate the New” each season of BKFW to support charitable organizations including (The Abner Louima Foundation, MTV Staying Alive Foundation and the Japan Society).
BKSF lends a voice to issues including human rights, HIV/AIDS awareness, community development and leadership training. In 2007 BKFS established a partnership with the William H. Maxwell High School in the impoverished and underserved East New York section of Brooklyn. The following year, BSF started Stitch for Success to help low income individuals earn income from fashion-related fields, which has grown into an internship and job training program in 2011. On September 2011, BKSF found the perfect partner – Industry City (at Bush Terminal in Sunset Park, Brooklyn). Hailed as Brooklyn’s new waterfront area for prime business development and a diverse residential community, Industry City is the new home of BKFW.
