After a few days of logging onto Facebook, did you wonder why your friends had become comic book characters? Instead of only stating what’s on their mind, they show you what‘s happening. This week the mobile app, Bitstrips, launched its 1.17 version for iPhone, iOS and Android users. The mobile app, with thousands of customizable templates (new ones added daily), is taking over with more than 10 million users. Just a few months back, in July, Bitstrips had 3 million users.
Toronto-based company, Venturebeat.com, plans to add premium content and clothing, making you and your friends the “next big brand… the next superhero”. If Venturebeat doesn't advertise, why is it so popular? The same way you can become known in media and entertainment. The app has irritated some involuntary subscribers, but it presents opportunities for graphic artists and content producers:
Graphic Novels, Comics, “Sunday Funnies”. Mainstream publishers, like Marvel and DC, hire writers and artists to create works using licensed characters. Others, like book publishers, hire artists who are responsible for creating new characters and storylines. You know how to craft a story using pictures and words. Brevity is key, and the fact that you illustrate your own material is of greater value. The art of storytelling and narrative skills at its finest.
Kevin Grevioux, the Lycan from Underworld who’s done voiceovers (Planet of the Apes, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine") and worked as prop assistant (sci-fi series, "Stargate"), has a new monster to unleash. I Frankenstein is a sci-fi take on the Mary Shelley classic. He sealed this deal by taking the graphic route, “I [used] the graphic novel to help me sell my screenplay… You [increase] your chances of selling your script with accompanying artwork or storyboards”.
Television, Film / Movies. You convey action and emotion -- over time -- in a visual narrative. Bitstrips isn’t Twilight but it opens doors to new releases if you have a character to introduce or story to tell. Grevioux advises writers and filmmakers to close the door on doubters, “Find a way to create your own intellectual properties. Learn how to write and learn how to draw well… once [you do that], the world is your oyster”. Canadian comic artist, Dave Sim, said you must draw 1,000 pages of comics before they draw their first good page. Even if you’ve dived into Bitstrip-mania, you have work ahead of you.
Get to crafting, good luck!
