Birthplace of Thomas Edison

Thomas Alva Edison was born in Milan, Ohio.  Milan is located south of Sandusky in northern Ohio and is approximately a 5 hour drive from Indianapolis. The drive is a pretty road/day trip and provides a chance to see some Indiana and Ohio farmland and animals.

Milan is a little town filled with a lot of history.  The most notable site is the birthplace of Thomas Edison, the inventor of the phonograph, the incandescent light bulb, and many other devices that make our lives fuller and easier. Edison was a genius and America's greatest inventor having registered 1,093 patents during his lifetime with his most famous being the incandescent light bulb. In 1877 Edison invented the phonograph and his first recording was "Mary Had A Little Lamb".  Along with his many other advancements, he is also responsible for the motion pictures. He made the first western motion picture in 1904 (The Great Train Robbery).

Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847 and spent his early childhood years exploring the town of Milan and the woods surrounding this beautiful area.  The original home has been restored and furnished as it was in 1847.  The three-story brick house sits on the side of a hill and consists of three floors: the basement, the street-level, and the second floor.

The scenic town square of Milan is delightful with its charm of a by-gone era where you can relax in the park and enjoy the tranquility of a small town. The town park is surrounded by many antique shops, friendly restaurants and other businesses all with fascinating architecture.

And you won't want to miss the unique Carnegie library located on the square across from an old stagecoach inn. The library is interesting not only if you enjoy reading, but also because of its long history and unique architecture. This library will celebrate its centennial in 2012.
