Not all women would choose to participate in a half marathon for a birthday present but Oakland Resident Stephaney Claybon did. Stephaney set the goal in January, trained for 12 weeks, and successfully completed 13.1 miles in the Inaugural Oakland Running Festival's Half Marathon, March 28, 2010.
Happy Birthday Stephaney!
As a newcomer to racing, Stephaney considered the 5K (3.1 mile) Twilight Run on March 27 as her projected goal. When her coach talked her into a half marathon, Stephaney set her sights higher and started training!
Using a program that started out with about 10 miles a week (walking or running) averaging 3 - 4 miles every other day, Stephaney gradually added a mile a week on to her long workouts until her longest practice run/walk covered 12 miles. She knew the goal was a reality.
On March 28, 2010 Stephaney, wearing a special birthday t-shirt, set off from the START line in downtown Oakland. A few hours later she crossed the finish line. Great job Stephaney!
The immediate goal, following her successful race, was to go home and have birthday cake. It was suggested that, for rehydration purposes, she add in a chocolate milkshake, too.
Stephaney trained with The WOW Team - a Bay Area women's walking and running group that encourages every women to strive high and make fitness a regular part of her life. What's your next goal Stephaney? You'll have another birthday coming up before you know it!
