A woman was forced to give birth on a hospital lawn after a nurse turned her away from while she was in labor. FOX News reports Oct. 10 that the incident took place Oct. 2 at the southern state of Oaxaca in Mexico. Irma Lopez, 29, was told by a nurse she was "not ready" to deliver and told her go for a walk outside and that the doctor would check her the next morning.
An hour-and-a-half after Lopez was denied medical assistance, her water broke and she had her son on the facility's lawn.
Images of the woman who giving birth on the lawn has enraged citizens in Mexico. A witness was able to snap the photo that took place at Rural Health Center of the village of San Felipe Jalapa de Diazand. The image was given to a news reporter and it has since gone viral.
In light of this event, the government of Oaxaca has suspended the health center's director, Dr. Adrian Cruz, while officials conduct a full federal investigation into this disturbing incident.
"I didn't want to deliver like this. It was so ugly and with so much pain," Lopez said.
It was noted in the report that Lopez gave birth on the lawn alone because her husband was inside trying to convince the nurse that she was definitely in labor and about to deliver their third child.
This case of a woman having her baby right outside a medical center has highlighted the poor maternal care women get. Numerous women die during or after pregnancy. There are significant issues regarding discrimination against indigenous people.
Lopez was admitted into the hospital after she gave birth on the lawn and discharged the same day with $30 worth of prescription medications. She and the baby are doing well.
