Birds that can be seen now at Famosa Slough

Famosa Slough is a winter hangout for many bird species that visit San Diego. In the winter, there are a few extra visitors. Here is a list of some of the birds that have been seen recently in January 2012:

Sandpipers and Plovers:

Lots of killdeer right now, especially on the middle “island”. They are often hard to see as they blend in very well. Willets are also commonplace. Sometimes, a greater or lesser yellowlegs can be seen, though on some days, they may not show up.

Stilts and Avocets:

Avocets were plentiful during the January monthly bird walk on January 2st, but there were no stilts to be seen that day. However, stilts are often commonly seen here.

Ducks:

Ducks are very plentiful right now. Two domestic mallards are still there as usual. Other ducks include many northern pintails, especially on the larger, southern end. American wigeons can sometimes be seen on the northern end, but occasionally the southern end as well. Blue winged teal and gadwall are also seen there, too. And, of course, lots of ruddy ducks and a few lesser scaup.

Herons and egrets:

Great blue herons, black-crowned night herons and a little blue heron still frequent the area. The little blue heron wasn't seen on the January monthly bird walk, but he hangs out there most of the time later in the morning and afternoon. Snowy egrets are common and at least one great egret is still in the area. The yellow-crowned night heron was not seen and is usually not seen during this time of year.

Raptors:

There is a pair of peregrine falcons in the area. A good way to spot one is by noticing how agitated the birds get, then search the sky for swirling pigeons or starlings. Shorebirds seem to notice the falcon from miles away. There is also a Cooper's hawk who sometimes sits on top poles or in trees.

Other birds:

Other birds include many Anna's hummingbirds, some of which are nesting. Rock pigeons and starlings are frequently seen. Occasionally, a song sparrow, white crowned sparrow, and house sparrows pass into view. A female belted kingfisher was seen on the last bird walk.

Famosa Slough is located just off West Point Loma Boulevard and Famosa Boulevard. The slough is on both sides of West Point Loma Boulevard. On street parking is usually available in the area.  It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
