Many New England birdwatchers enjoy watching their own backyard birds from the comfort of their deck. Others make daytrips to area birding spots. Most, however, can only dream about seeing the brightly colored exotic species found in far off places like Ecuador’s cloud forest or the Galapagos Islands. Fortunately for New England bird enthusiasts, Eduardo del Solar and the Mass Audubon's Boston Nature Center (BNC)  are teaming up to provide an unforgettable exhibit of birds from both of those distant lands.

Birds of the Americas III is the third of a series of bird photography exhibits that del Solar has put on in conjunction with the Boston Nature Center. The exhibit this year will focus on shore birds of the Americas and will feature some absolutely stunning photographs of such striking specimens as the blue-footed booby, the Inca tern, and the ivory-billed gull. While those attending the exhibit can’t officially add these to their life bird lists, the photographs capture the essence of the birds so well that the experience is arguably better than seeing them in person.

Eduardo del Solar’s photographs capture not only every detail of each birds, physical appearance, but seem to somehow convey the essence of their personality along with a sensory reproduction of the wind currents that held each bird aloft as they flew. He has graciously allowed us to include a small sample of the hundreds of photographs that will be on display in this article.

The exhibit will run from October 3rd to October 31st at the Boston Nature Center in Mattapan, MA. The center is open from 9:00-5:00 PM on weekdays, and from 10:00-4:00 on Saturdays, Sundays, and Monday holidays. The exhibit will begin with a wine and cheese reception from 2:00-4:00 PM on Saturday October 3rd to which the public is invited. For directions and more information visit the BNC website. Whether you can make it to the opening event to meet Eduardo del Solar or not, be sure you get to the Boston Nature Center in Mattapan during the month of October to see his incredible images of the Birds of the Americas III.

“For this exhibit my driving goal was to get images of endemic species from South America in their natural habitat. This year I visited the islands of San Cristobal, Santa Cruz and Española in Galapagos as well as the Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve in mainland Ecuador. Coastal birds from Lima and images of northern visitors to New England are part of this exhibit as well,” del Solar wrote in his open invitation to the wine and cheese reception that marks the opening of the Birds of the Americas III exhibit on October 3rd.

Eduardo del Solar has been a public school teacher in Boston for 25 years, teaching technology classes within the city. On weekends and vacations, he says, he eagerly grabs his camera and heads out to catch his subjects in the day’s first light. He builds his own websites for each of his photographic projects. They can all be accessed from his main website at delsolar.org. Prints from the current exhibit as well as those from Birds of the Americas I and Birds of the Americas II are available for purchase at del Solar’s website.
