Millions have been glued to their computer screens watching in fascination. Over 48 million to be exact. It's not Dancing with the Stars and it's not Survivor. It's simply a mating pair of bald eagles with their young who have been captivating online viewers for two months now. In that time, an idea the Raptor Research Project had to once again install streaming video cameras over a bald eagle nest in Decorah Iowa, in an effort to increase awareness, has become nothing less than a complete internet sensation. They are known as the "Decorah Eagles".
But Pennsylvania residents don't have to logon to a computer to enjoy their own avian soap opera unfolding, they can do so in their own back yards. In fact, Pennsylvania has over 200 active bald eagle nests. A majority of these are located along the larger rivers and lakes in the state and 50 of the 67 counties now have at least one active nest according to PA wildlife officials. It seems that few can now argue against the remarkable success of bald eagle reintroduction into PA.
For residents who live away from bald eagle nesting locations, fear not. You too can still enjoy watching the daily nesting activities of other birds of prey closer to home. You just have to look, up. The large nest sitting 50 feet off the highway might seem like a clump of limbs high in the tree as you pass it just south of the Hunterstown exit on U.S. 15. But make no mistake, it's occupied and judging from the size, which is about two times the size of a car tire, it took mom and dad a while to build.
