The common House Sparrow is a formidable competitor for most backyard birds. It is voracious in appetite and many in number. During this very mild weather situation in Florence, South Carolina the House Sparrow is beginning to make sounds of pairing off to begin the next generation.
Florence is host to many varieties of birds. From the tiny Carolina Chickadee to the Red-bellied Woodpecker and all can be found at seed and suet feeders. The tenacious common sparrow will out bid other birds for use of your birdfeeder and for nest boxes.
The House Sparrow was brought into the United States from the Mediterranean in the 1850’s. It was thought their main diet would be the green inch-worms that were killing trees in Central Park in New York City. Thus began the trek of the House Sparrow across the United States at the expense of some of our native birds. Perhaps the only saving grace for the House Sparrow is that it is considered a songbird.
