If there's one thing developer BioWare is good at it's creating huge stories inside even bigger universes. Mass Effect is so full of potential that even though Mass Effect 3 is the end of Shepard's story, they aren't ruling out the possiblity of another game in the future.
"We've spent a lot of time building the IP and building this amazing world," said Michael Gamble, BioWare Edmonton's producer.. "We don't have anything to announce, and ME3 is the end of Shepard's story of course, but who knows? We may tell additional stories in the future."
Gamble points out that there is a great deal of backstory to the series, which is shown off in game.
"If you boot up Mass Effect 3 and look through the codices you'll see we have tonnes and tonnes of backstory.
"Without going down any specific path, you can think of many, many different areas throughout the IP, throughout the history, where there are large wars to be won, battles to be had, and a lot of development to be done around where these races came from, how they came about.
"We have so much to draw from. We haven't made a decision about whether we'll do anything in the future, but if we were to do something, we just have a lot of information to choose from."
It sounds like a prequel is a possibility, as well as yet another sequel. One thing is for sure: BioWare has everywhere to go with this franchise if they choose to continue it.
