Prior to my sojourn to the desert island of Aruba I had mentioned that Jimmy Burchfield's Classic Entertainment & Sports would be co-promoting a show on January 19th at Mohegan Sun with Main Events. The feature and co-featured bouts on the card will air on NBC Sports Network, but the undercard may be more interesting to local fight fans as Vladine Biosse (14-1-1, 7 KO), the man known as "Mr. Providence" will return to the ring for the first time since July 2012.
Before I left the country it was unknown who Biosse who face on January 19th and even though Biosse himself had confirmed he was appearing on the card, without an opponent this close to fight night it felt a bit like he had been announced before anything had been confirmed. Well as of right now we can confirm that Biosse will be on the show, and he will be taking on Marcus Upshaw (14-8-2, 6 KO).
Upshaw is a strange fighter to pin down. If you look at his record he doesn't look that imposing. I mean in his last six fights he's 1-4-1, with the only win coming against Darrell Richardson last January (2012) in Mallory Square in Key West, Florida. However, Upshaw also has a win over Renan St. Juste on his record from 2010, and I watched him lose a split decision to Tarvis Simm back in August 2009 in a fight that I had scored for Upshaw. He also lost a unanimous decision six round fight to Edwin Rodriguez, and bounced back to fight James McGirt to a draw.
I certainly think Biosse should be the favorite in this fight but nobody should look past Upshaw, he's not a world beater but he's a tough out and he will give Mr. Providence everything he can handle. As of right now the plan is for me to be ringside on Jan. 19th and I will have more with Mr. Providence as the week goes on.
