'BioShock' studio shutting down as Levine to start new story driven game venture

Irrational Games co-founder Ken Levine revealed some shocking news Tuesday just ahead of the release of the final BioShock Infinite DLC pack for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. The studio that helped drive the current trend of story-driven games is closing and Levine plans to start a new venture under the Take Two umbrella.

"I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it," Levine announced in a letter posted to the Irrational Games website. "I’ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two. That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team. There’s no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition."

Levine did not offer any details on what the new studio will be called or this new entrepreneurial endeavor but he did promise a focus on core gamers and story-driven games.

"In time we will announce a new endeavor with a new goal: To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable. To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally."

Interestingly, this new endeavor will be part of Take Two who was the publisher for Irrational Games as well.

So what happens with the BioShock franchise? It now falls to 2K Games to decide if they wish to continue the franchise with a new developer. This won't be the first time that a BioShock title was developed by another studio though as BioShock 2 was handled by 2K Marin.
