Bionic hand allows man to feel for the first time in years

According to a video published on YouTube by Epflnews on Feb. 5, a new bionic hand is not only helping one Denmark man to hold onto objects, it is helping him feel them as well.

In the video Silvestro Micera of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland explains that the new bionic hand not only restores use of the hand for the recipient, it also restores their sense of touch.

Dennis Aabo Sorensen, 36, who lost his hand in a firework accident in 2004, was the first recipient of the new bionic arm. After surgery and months of training, Sorensen was blindfolded and handed a number of objects that he was able to feel for the first time in nearly 10 years.

Sorensen says he could feel round things, and hard things, and soft things, and that the feedback was “totally new” to him.

While it seems the bionic hand was successful during Sorensen's clinical trail, reports indicate it is not ready for the general public.
