Biocryst received a further $77.2 million contract from the federal government for further development of the IV flu drug called Peramivir.
The Department of Health and Human Services requested a supply of the drug to treat critically ill influenza patients. Between 1,000 and 40,000 doses could be ordered.
The drug would be approved under the recently approved FDA emergency use authorization.

The action is just a little late for several people in the US as detailed in this article. Its a little late for the 36 who have died in Alabama.

I first reported the phase III approval of this drug in Japan in this article http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-6180-Birmingham-Science-News-Examiner~y2009m7d20-Biocryst-Pharmaceuticals--Flu-Killer.
Some imbecile commented "what if it killed somebody" and "that the article was based on a stock report" Well idiot it did not kill a single one of the 1100 Japanese who participated in the same Phase III protocol that produced approval for manufacture in Japan.
Thanks to millions in Tamiflu lobbying dollars and foot dragging at the FDA who claimed to be "fast tracking" this drug two years ago the tardiness of approval in the US has killed hundreds.
The FDA needs a total and complete overhaul to eliminate the lobbying dollar control and to bring it into a people oriented mind set instead of a dollar dominated system.
