Dr. Screven Edgerton is an Austin OB/Gyn doctor with a mission. He wants to evaluate and treat your hormonal balance, or imbalance, on an individual basis.  Peri-menopause and full menopause are part of every woman's natural aging. Dr. Edgerton can help.

The video in this article explains the process which can require several months to achieve the correct balance. Specific testing is done to customize the exact prescription needed. Bio-identical hormones are not new, but balancing them to the individual is certainly the way to go. There are other conditions which can be helped by body friendly hormones.

Tracy Ganske, RN MS of Austin Bioidentical Hormone Therapy recommends coming in to their clinic to receive customized treatment for food allergies, thyroid conditions, adrenal gland problems, depression, weight loss or weight gain, and complaints of low libido. These treatments have also been recommended by Oprah and Suzanne Summers. Suzanne has several videos on the subject on YouTube. Do a search for Suzanne Summers or just on bio-identical hormones.

Sleeping problems are also related to hormonal imbalances. If you have night sweats, difficulty sleeping, fatigue and headaches, a personal consultation and lab tests would certainly be in order. You can call 512-459-4400 to schedule an appointment at the Balanced Hormones and Health wellness center here in Austin. Most insurance plans are accepted.  All personal prescriptions from BH2 are compounded by their lab in Salt Lake City, Utah and then mailed to your home address.

Another pharmacy that does personal compounding prescriptions is located here in Austin and is called The People's Pharmacy.

Jim Meyer, Doctor of Pharmacy, CCN, practices at the wellness clinic associated with The People's Rx and he also does consultations, saliva tests, etc. and can revamp your diet and prescribe nutritionals and customized therapy that will help with aging and associated problems as above. The People's Rx includes highly trained nutritionists, naturopaths, homeopaths, chiropractors, acupuncturists, health seminars and private consultations.

What is compounding? ( From the People's Rx Website)

Compounding is the preparation of customized medications prescribed by a licensed practitioner. Compounding can provide medications that are dye-free, preservative-free, sugar-free, alcohol-free, and lactose/gluten/wheat-free for patients with allergies or other sensitivities. Medications can be made in different strengths and dosage forms, tailored specifically to meet the needs of the patient (or pet!).

There are some health articles around that discourage hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and the jury is still out unfortunately. Ask your friends, ask your doctor, and perhaps best of all, ask a doctor that specializes in HRT. Bio-Identical hormones are exactly the same hormones as those produced naturally in the body which is why they are called Bio-identical. They are made from natural ingredients. Taking a customized approach can be very beneficial as each body produces different levels of hormones and neuro transmitters. If you are lacking in a specific hormone, you can get just that exact hormone replaced without getting extra that you don't need.

Please feel free to leave comments at the end of this article and recommend specific doctors and pharmacists. Also let us know of your experiences with hormone replacement therapy. Were you helped? Were you harmed? Share your knowledge!

That is pretty interesting. I heard about this on the Oprah show.

I've been taking bioidentical hormones for over 5 years, since the age of 43. I got my health and life back after suffering with low energy and depression for over 20 years. In regard to hormones it is critical to know that hypothyroidism frequently goes undiagnosed because mainstream doctors do not know how to properly diagnose and treat it. Hypothyroidism is a huge part of hormonal imbalances in women and in men as we age and sometimes is present even in childhood.
