Bellator MMA 112: Straus vs. Curran 3 took place at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana last night on Friday, March 14th. The main event for Bellator MMA 112 was the rubber match between newly crowned Bellator MMA Featherweight Champion Daniel Straus and the former champ Pat Curran. The Bellator 112 card also featured the opening round Bellator's Season 10 Welterweight tournament. Out of the eight original participants, three had to pull out prior to the event including big names like TUF 6 competitor War Machine and former UFC Welterweight title contender and the Inaugural 'Fight Master: Bellator MMA' winner Joe "Diesel" Riggs. Binns Management client Sam "Sammy O" Oropeza was scheduled to face off against Riggs, but due to an injury Riggs pulled out. Oropeza's new opponent for the first round of the Bellator MMA $100K tournament was undefeated American Top Team fighter and Bellator MMA veteran Cristiano Souza (7-0).
In the main event, the Bellator Featherweight title was on the line. This was the third meeting between Pat Curran and Daniel Straus. In their first bout Curran defeated Straus via KO in the 2nd round. More than four and a half years later, Curran and Straus met again inside the cage, only this time it was for the Bellator MMA Featherweight Title. Then Champ, Pat Curran lost in the rematch to Straus via dominating Unanimous Decision. After the second fight, Bellator MMA made an immediate rematch between Curran and Straus, to the dismay of Bellator MMA Featherweight number one contender Patricio "Pitbull" Freire. Many fans didn't understand why the immediate rematch was made, but after last night I'm sure they aren't too upset about it anymore. In the rubber match between Straus and Curran, after an extremely close and competitive fight Curran defeated Daniel Straus via Rear-Naked Choke submission with 14 seconds left in the 5-round war, regaining his Bellator MMA Featherweight Championship.
As previously stated, Sam Oropeza took on Cristiano Souza in the first round of the Season 10 Welterweight tournament. Oropeza defeated Souza via vicious first round knockout. Souza was on a 7-fight win streak before running into 215MMA fighter and Binns Management client Sam Oropeza. Souza was known for his unique fighting style, using Capoeira kicks in his technique. The fight began slow with a few clinches up against the cage. Oropeza landed a takedown, but Souza got right back up to his feet. Oropeza came in with a sweeping right hook that landed right on the jaw of Souza putting him down. Oropeza followed up with some stiff left punches while Souza was on the ground, forcing referee Rob Madrigal to step in. Oropeza will now advance to the semi-finals and take on Russian fighter Andrey "Spartan" Koreshkov on April 11th at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California. Koreshkov defeated Philadelphia native and former UFC fighter Nah-Shon Burrell via 41 second first round Knockout to advance to the semi-finals.
