Previous honorees have included Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Dave Brubeck, Zubin Mehta, Dolly Parton, Van Cliburn, Stevie Wonder and Fred Ebb and John Kander.
Joel's career has been long and celebrated- and his personal life has been turbulent at times.
Fans know Joel for his music and also for his series of "Masterclasses" - presented primarily on college campuses to music students and actors, these events reveal a glimpse into an artist;s creative process and reveal Billy Joel on a much more personal level.
The Kennedy Center Honors medallions will be presented on Saturday, December 7, the night before the gala, at a State Department dinner hosted by Secretary of State John Kerry- at(if he still holds that post by December).
The Honors Gala will be recorded for broadcast on the CBS Network for the 36th consecutive year as a two-hour primetime special on Sunday, December 29 at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT).
