Billboard debuts EDM songs chart with Britney and Swedish House Mafia on top

After unveiling updated genre charts back in October, Billboard embraced the EDM community with its new Dance/Electronic Songs tally. The American chart company launched the grouping on Thursday with will.i.am and Britney Spears' “Scream & Shout” at No. 1, followed by Swedish House Mafia's “Don't You Worry Child” with John Martin.

Billboard revamped its genre (rock, Latin, R&B, country, hip-hop) charts in October. Instead of solely being based on airplay from specific radio station formats, they were expanded to include digital sales and online streaming, matching the formula behind the all-genre Hot 100 singles tally. The new Dance/Electronic Songs chart will take into account the same factors along with playlists from club disk jockeys who report to Billboard. The chart company can now measure the country's biggest EDM singles.

“Titles eligible for the chart will be determined based on a song's core sound and tempo,” Billboard reported about songs on its electronic tally. The inaugural edition of the chart opens with will.i.am and Britney Spears' club banger, “Scream & Shout,” in the top spot. EDM trio Swedish House Mafia trail at No. 2 with “Don't You Worry Child” while Calvin Harris and singer Florence Welch come in at No. 3 with “Sweet Nothing.” Remixes of songs that are originally pop, rock, or other non-electronic genres are not allowed to enter the new chart.

The Dance/Electronic Songs chart joins Billboard's other EDM-based groupings solely representing radio airplay, club airplay, or digital sales for the genre. The chart company also launched the On Demand chart to track online song streaming and the R&B Albums chart this week.
