Bill Russell arrested? That's not a headline fans would expect from the Boston Celtics great. Russell got arrested for bringing a gun into an airport Wednesday night (Oct. 16), though, tarnishing his legacy a bit. According to a report from ESPN on Saturday (Oct. 19), he was traveling through the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport when the incident took place.
The report goes on to state that a loaded gun was found in his carry-on luggage, leading airport police to take him into custody at that point. Passengers are not allowed to take firearms on planes in their carry-on bags, which is what he did wrong here. If he had placed the gun in his checked baggage and unloaded the weapon he would not have been taken into custody. He did several things wrong here, leaving the Sea-Tac police with very little choice.
With Bill Russell arrested, the airport police turned him over to the Port of Seattle police. He has now been cited on a state charge of taking a weapon into a prohibited area. He has already been released, but the weapon he tried to take on the plane has been confiscated.
Russell is one of the most talented players to ever step on a basketball court and is a member of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. He won 11 NBA championships with the Boston Celtics and was a coach for the Seattle SuperSonics over a five year span. Now, though, he will have to come back to Seattle to deal with this gun charge.
