Fox News host Bill O’Reilly says same sex marriage opponents are “Bible thumpers;” lacking any compelling argument against gay marriage.
O’Reilly slammed same-sex marriage foes on Tuesday night’s edition of “The O’Reilly Factor,” claiming those who oppose granting gays and lesbians the right to legally wed have a weak argument that rests solely on religious beliefs.
After Fox New personality Megyn Kelly pointed out that arguments against same sex marriage are not very persuasive once the religious element is removed, O’Reilly said:
I agree with you 100 percent, the compelling argument is on the side of homosexuals. That is where the compelling argument is: We’re Americans, we just want to be treated like everybody else. That’s a compelling argument, and to deny that you’ve got to have a very strong argument on the other side. And the other side hasn’t been able to do anything but thump the Bible.
Later O’Reilly said:
I support civil unions, I always have. The gay marriage thing, I don’t feel that strongly about it one way or the other. I think the states should do it.
Same sex marriage is currently legal in nine states and the District of Columbia.
