Bill O'Reilly defends Fox News' Megyn Kelly assertion that Santa Claus is white

Bill O'Reilly yesterday defended his Fox News colleague Megyn Kelly, claiming that she is the victim of liberal media attacks aimed at diminishing the Fox News brand of conservatism.

"Miss Kelly is correct. Santa was a white person.” O’Reilly said during "The O’Reilly Factor." Kelly touched off an media uproar last week when she said: "Santa just is white…Santa is what he is." Kelly added fuel to the fire by adding that Jesus was white, too.

But O'Reilly added, "Does it matter? No, it doesn’t matter.”

Kelly then backed away under management pressure at Fox News and claimed her comments were "tongue-in-cheek" and with sour grapes said the controversy was a result of "race-baiting" by critics, in response to what was widely viewed as "race-baiting" comments by Kelly.

O’Reilly acknowledged Kelly’s Santa comments caused some controversy and went through a detailed history of Santa and his various iterations from 280 A.D. through the Renaissance to the modern day image that he attributed to a 19th-century cartoonist.

However, O’Reilly said it is not about race. "The spirit of Santa transcends all racial boundaries," he said.

Instead, O’Reilly chalked the matter up to another example of Fox News being targeted.

"Because they can not defeat us on the media battlefield, the far left seeks to demonize Fox News as a right-wing propaganda machine and a racist enterprise," O’Reilly said. "That’s why Miss Megyn Kelly got headlines about a Santa Claus remark that was totally harmless."

But it was not harmless. Race-baiting and racism are never harmless.
