“’I really think that a filibuster is the political version of twerking. And for those people who say, ‘Ted Cruz, he hung himself.’ No. Just like Miley Cyrus, she came out the winner in that. Everybody said, ‘oh, she’s ruined her career.’ She’s on the cover of Rolling Stone, her records are outselling anybody else’s. I think Ted Cruz is going to be the winner too,’ Maher said.”
Only Maher, who has become most infamous for his obscene and misogynistic attacks on Sarah Palin, could regard Cruz’s marathon speech against Obamacare and flash to Miley Cyrus, made up to look like a demon, grinding her pelvis and sticking out her tongue. By that standard, Cicero’s oration against Lucius Sergius Catalina was a Roman orgy and Churchill’s defiance of the Nazis was a back alley encounter in Whitechapel.
Still, Maher, who represents the seamier side of liberal thought, did reveal something. Cruz is not going to be easily dismissed, even by the ideologues of the far left. The 21 hour plus speech was brilliant political theater, but it is also the stuff, as Maher admitted in his own way, that makes political careers.
