Bill Loeffler, a two-time Colorado Open champion, captured his first Colorado Senior Open Friday by firing a final-round 66 to win by five strokes.
Loeffler, a member of the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame, shot a 6-under-par score in the third round. to finish at 10-under 206 on the par-72 Green Valley Ranch Golf Club course. Loeffler was two shots off the pace after Thursday's second round, but his 66 enabled him to beat four players who were at 5-under 211. First-round co-leader Thomas Herzan, Champions Tour player
Danny Edwards, Aurora's Russell Clark and first- and second-round co-leader Joe Stansberry tied for second place.
Loeffler earned $8,500 for the victory in the 10th edition of the Senior Open. The four second-place finishers each earned $3,025. Loeffler's 66 was a tournament record for the final round.
He follows Mike Zaremba of Pueblo as winner of both the Colorado Open and the Senior Open.
Second-round co-leader Curt Schnell shot a final-day 77 to finish tied for 17th. Stansberry had a 1-over 73 to drop out of the top spot he held the first two days.
Frank Fager of Centennial and Robert Polk of Parker were tied for 17th at 1-under 21 for low amateur honors. Fager earned the low amateur honor with a par on the first playoff hole, with Polk shooting a bogey.
