Bill Cosby talks about Spurs and good San Antonio weather

Bill Cosby, the man that has graced our television, Life and Saturday Evening Post magazines, and now, our Facebook, Twitter and other social media pages, walked on stage at the Majestic Theater sharply at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 29, 2012, and was greeted with a nice standing ovation.

Looking all of his 74 years, his certified gray beard and sweat shirt presented him in an air of comfort as he calmly sat down and talked.

In a kind of tedious introduction, Cosby slowly reeled the audience in with his classic set ups and rubber faced expressions.

For almost two and a half hours, he was awarded with many great laughs in between his reminiscent stories of growing up, being married, family and just about anything else he wanted to.

The Cosby audience knows their man is not the kind of guy who will throw out a bunch of standup one-liners. With over 50 years of practice, he has outlasted the Pryors, Carlins, and Dangerfields of the comedy world by not resting on his laurels.

Cosby tends to whirl his magic through honed and faultless timing of his expressive American tales of growing up kind of poor in the Philadelphia projects.

Cosby arrived in San Antonio Saturday. He was limo'ed out to La Cantera's Barnes and Noble to sign some books and meet fans and then spent the evening relaxing at the La Mansion hotel on the River Walk.  He chatted about the Spurs (he was once part owner of the Golden State Warriors)  and the good San Antonio weather.

He flew back to Boston after the show. He lives in Shelburne, a town of about 2,000, almost 95 miles from Boston where the high temperature was 40 degrees Sunday.

His father was gone for long periods of time in the Navy while son Bill was growing up.

“It was because of my father that from the ages of seven to fifteen, I thought that my name was Jesus Christ and my brother, Russell, thought that his name was Dammit. "Dammit, will you stop all that noise?" And, "Jesus Christ, sit down!" One day, I'm out playing in the rain, and my father yelled, "Dammit will you get back in here!" I said, "Dad, I'm Jesus Christ!"

Cosby said he will never forget when his father said “I’m gonna tell you something, and I want you to remember this for the rest of your life – and then he knocked me out.”

“My father established our relationship when I was seven years old,” Cosby tells. “He looked at me and said, "You know, I brought you in this world, and I can take you out. And it don't make no difference to me, I'll make another one look just like you."

The veteran comic maintains his ability to work the audience by having them roaring in laughter one moment and dangling them wordlessly to see what rubbery facial expression he’ll  come up with next.
