It's been more than two months since the first images and trailer hit for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, but now we have a pair of new ones courtesy of the Tolkien fanatics at TheOneRing.net. One is more revealing than others, and seems to be from the 9th chapter of the novel, titled Barrels Out of Bond, when Bilbo and his dwarven fellowship escape capture by the elves by floating downstream in wooden barrels.
The trailer hinted at the possibility of Peter Jackson making a few changes to the scene, and this image would seem to confirm that. Unlike the book, the dwarfs are exposed and apparently under an arrow attack, likely by the elves they just escaped from. It's considerably more of an action scene than Tolkien dreamed up, but should look fantastic on silver screen under Jackson's guidance. The other image is a "key art" poster of Bilbo reflected in the eye of Smaug, and can be found here.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens on December 13th.
