Bike shelter proposed for German Village

The construction of a permanent bike shelter in German Village has been proposed by the city of Columbus. The location of the shelter would be in front of the Cup O' Joe coffee shop at 627 S. Third Street.

The shelter is one of 10 to be built around the city as phase two of the Bicentennial Bikeways plan. Other locations include OSU campus and COSI, according to the plan (a PDF of which can be seen in its entirety at the Alta Planning website). It will hold up to ten bicycles at a time, and the cost of each of the shelters is approximately $25,000.

Public meetings are planned in the near future for commentary by those in the neighborhood. And reaction is mixed at the outset, to say the least. Initial opinions vary from fervent approval of the shelter location by bike advocates in Columbus to downright disapproval by some local business owners and those worried about the aesthetics of the neighborhood.

A decision will likely not be made for several weeks on the location, allowing time for public input and more assessment by the city.

This Week newspapers has more information. And an examination of the proposed site is in the attached photo slideshow.
