On Tuesday, Canada included 2013 second-round draft pick Chris Bigras amongst their defenseman on their roster. Then on Thursday, fifth-round draft pick Will Butcher was named to the preliminary roster for Team USA.
Bigras currently plays for the Owen Sound Attack of the OHL; where he serves as an assistant captain, and has 10 points in 27 games this season. Last season Bigras played in the U-18 World Juniors for Canada; scoring three points in seven games.
Butcher is a freshman at the University of Denver. In 13 games for the Pioneers this season, he has three goals and one assist. He also played at the U-18 tournament last year; scouring four points in seven games.
Joining Butcher on the US roster is his DU teammate Quinton Shore. A Denver native, Shore has 10 points in 13 games for the Pioneers this season. An Ottawa Senators prospect, he also played on the U-18 tournament last season; scoring five points in six games. His brother Drew Shore played in the World Junior Championships in 2011.
The final Colorado connection that can be found on the preliminary rosters comes from the host nation of Sweden. Defenseman Gustav Olofsson is currently a freshman at Colorado College, where he has three points in nine games. Like Shore, he played midget hockey with the Colorado Thunderbirds. He was drafted in the second round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota Wild. If selected to the final roster, this will mark Olofsson’s first time representing Sweden in international competition.
The tournament is scheduled to run from Dec. 26 trough Jan. 5 in Malmo, Sweden.
