The following is a list of the biggest upsets in the NFL in Week 1, which ended on September 9, 2013. There were not a lot of upsets in Week 1, and there would have been one less except for a player making one of stupidest plays you will ever see which allowed an underdog to beat his team.
Biggest upsets in the NFL in Week 1 of the 2013 season
- Tennessee Titans upset the Pittsburgh Steelers as 7 point underdogs
The Tennessee Titans pulled off the biggest upset in the NFL in Week 1, when they went into Heinz Field in Pittsburgh and beat the Steelers, 16-9, as seven point underdogs. The Titans won the game with defense, as they only allowed the Steelers 195 total yards in the game.
Either the Titans are going to have a great defense this season, or the Steelers or going to have a lousy offense based upon this game. The Steelers did lose a key player, as center Maurkice Pouncey tore ligaments in his right knee and is probably out for the year.
The Steelers lost a home opener for the first time since the 2002 season, when the Oakland Raiders beat them.
- Philadelphia Eagles upset Washington Redskins as 4.5 point underdogs
The Philadelphia Eagles went on on the road to FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland in Week 1 and upset the Washington Redskins, 33-27, as 4.5 point underdogs. Using the new fast-paced offense of head coach Chip Kelly, the Eagles ran 53 plays in the first half as they built a 26-7 halftime lead.
Robert Griffin III, playing exactly eight months after he had major knee surgery, got the Redskins going in the second half to make the game close, but the Eagles hung on for the 33-27 win. LeSean McCoy ran for 184 yards and a TD, while quarterback Michael Vick threw two touchdowns and ran for another score to lead the Eagles to the upset win.
- New York Jets upset the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as 3 point underdogs
The New York Jets upset the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 18-17, at home as three point underdogs thanks to a stupid play by Bucs linebacker Lavonte David. After Tampa Bay had taken the lead with a field goal with less than minute to play, Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith got the ball back at his own 20 yard line with :34 seconds left in the game.
Smith hit tight end Kellen Winslow with a 25 yard pass on first down. On second down, Smith scrambled to his right and then took off for the sideline going out of bounds at the Tampa Bay 45 yard line with just seconds left in the game, when Lavonte David pulled an absolute rock, and hit Smith late out of bounds.
The 15 yard penalty put the ball on the Tampa 30 yard line, and Nick Folk ran out to hit a 47 yard field goal with :02 left in the game to give the Jets the 18-17 upset win. The stupid hit by Lavonte David was one of the dumbest plays I've ever seen, and it cost his team a win.
- Miami Dophins upset the Cleveland Browns as 1.5 point underdogs
The Miami Dolphins went on the road in Week 1 and upset the Cleveland Browns, 23-10, as 1.5 point underdogs. Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden was sacked six times and threw three interceptions in the game. Weeden has never looked like a NFL quarterback to me.
