Biggest Loser' 9 highlight: Players challenged to lose two percent of weight first on episode 12

The players were challenged to be the first person to lose two percent of their weight first on episode 12 of "The Biggest Loser" season nine. They were all given lanyards with the number of pounds they needed to lose on it, and that lanyard served as their entrance to the scale. When they thought they had lost the weight and were ready to weigh in, all they needed to do was press the big red button in the gym to alert the other contestants they were ready and then pray that they had done everything they needed.

Who didn't survive episode 12 of 'The Biggest Loser' season nine?

To call this week's challenge interesting would be an understatement. The challenge was simple, but I knew that this would be a challenge like none other.

Here is what the players had to lose for immunity:

  • Ashley - 6 pounds
  • Michael - 8 pounds
  • Koli - 6 pounds
  • Sam - 6 pounds
  • Sunshine - 5 pounds
  • Andrea - 5 pounds
  • Melissa - 4 pounds

Of course, the challenge came with a catch. If you pressed the button that opened the scale but you didn't lose two percent, you were no longer in the running for immunity.

I was really impressed with the drive and determination that all of the contestants showed throughout the week. I'm not sure I've ever seen them work as hard as they did this week.

Unlike other challenges, everyone was thinking about strategy when it came to the two percent challenge. Melissa was constantly asking people when they planned to weigh in because she wanted to gage when would be the best time for herself to weigh in. Melissa's question got Andrea and Ashley thinking, and on day two Ashley was considering pressing it the next morning. I liked Sunshine's thought the best, though. She told her father that she wasn't planning to weigh in at all. She had a big weight loss moment coming up (breaking 200 pounds), and she wanted to do it at the official weigh in, not half way through the week by herself.

On night two, Victoria surprised everyone by pushing the button, alerting everyone on campus that she was ready to weigh in. If she had actually lost the six pounds she needed to lose, I would've fallen over. Unfortunately for her, and not shocking at all, she only made it half way. The fact that she lost three pounds in two days is still really impressive, though.

On the morning of day four, Sam decided it was his time. He and Koli had talked about pressing the button in the morning the night before, and I guess Sam got to it first. When he stepped on the scale, I think all of the contestants knew that this was the end of the challenge. He needed to lose six pounds, and he actually lost 10 pounds. He blew the challenge out of the water. It wasn't too much of a surprise, though, because he and Koli had put in an intense workout in the night before.
