On 20 April 2009, a group of novice Bigfoot researchers came to the Mogollon Rim of Arizona to investigate further into the dense forests of what was soon to be nick-named the Hot Zone. Those present were Clay Randall with Shannon, Sterling, Jerry, and Mitchell Waite. They had spent the day searching the area which included a meadow they had heard which was an old abandoned homestead settled by the early pioneers of the area. This meadow was bordered with abundant apple trees which were planted in the early 1900s.
When they visited the meadow, they attempted their luck at sound blasting and tree knocking with no success. Later that day they entered into another section of the forest to place game cameras to watch the use of some prominent trails. The group had split up with Shannon, Jerry and Sterling going to the north, and Mitch (myself) and Clay headed south.
About a half an hour into the hike, the first group encountered voices filtering through the forest. They could not get a bearing on the voiced nor could they understand what was being said. However, they believed it to be the second group. Later on when the groups met back up they found this was not the case.
The second group had found some interesting game trail intersections and went about hanging the cameras to survey the area overnight. As I climbed a tree with a camera, I caught a human figure out of the corner of my eye. I was already eight feet in the air but I was able to catch a glimpse of the figure as it moved between bushes. I caught Clay’s attention, and the chase was on.
Clay did not wait for me to climb down the tree, but immediately gave chase. I ended up about one hundred yards behind and sometimes had to resort to tracking him. I followed him to an area of soft dirt, where I could see a set of large prints following Clay’s prints. I called out to him and he answered. I told him to come back because he was being followed. He did so without incident. We casted the best of the footprint and met back up with the first group.
Later that night, when we put out the fire to go to bed, the vocalizations began. It was payback time. We gave chase, but it only led us deeper into the forest. Was it a crazed coyote or was it Bigfoot mimicking a coyote?
