Bigalora Ann Arbor celebrates bourbon with a tasting event

I had been looking for an excuse to get to the new Bigalora in Ann Arbor. And now I’ve found one.

The Bigalora Bourbon Experience takes place this Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m.

At this casual afternoon tasting, participants will enjoy bourbons from several iconic distilleries, as well as appetizers thoughtfully prepared by Chef Luciano DelSignore, chef and owner of the three Bigalora restaurants, and the critically acclaimed Bacco Ristorante in Southfield.

What is Bourbon, anyway?

Bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. By law, a bourbon must be produced in the USA and be:

  • Made of a grain mix of at least 51% corn
  • Distilled at less than 160 proof (or 80% ABV)
  • Contain no additives – other than water to reduce proof
  • Aged in new, charred white oak barrels

And to be called “straight bourbon”, it ages for a minimum of two years.

Your guided Bigalora tour of this great American spirit will include a look at the distilling process, and you’ll taste a couple rare gems along the way.

So what’s on tap?

  • First Sip- the welcome--Parker's Heritage Collection: Promise of Hope (one time bottling)
  • Second Sip- the beginning of bourbon; with snacks --Elijah Craig 12 year with Bigalora's Wood Roasted Peanuts
  • Third Sip- the innovation of wheat --W.L. Weller
  • Fourth Sip- bottles and the branding game --Old Forrester served with Wood Fired Focaccia
  • Fifth Sip- prohibition ends... LETS PARTY! --Corner Creek Reserve
  • Sixth Sip- prohibition's repercussions and finding the sweet spot --Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon served with locally sourced chocolate
  • Seventh Sip- bourbon becomes fashionable again, here's how! --very special and rare orphan barrel - Barterhouse 20 year
  • Eighth Sip- glory days, pairings, the present and the future --Booker's paired with house spun vanilla gelato topped with Italian pistachio liqueur

The tasting is $58 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Reserve your spot by calling Bigalora at 734-971-BIGA (2442), or email Crazy Dave at

Bigalora is located at 3050 Washtenaw, Suite 112, Ann Arbor, 48104. You can find them on Facebook too.
