The volunteers of the Senior Corps Programs of United Way are once again sponsoring a Yard Sale on July 16th. The Yard Sale will be held from 8 am – 1pm in Charleston at the corner of Court and Smith Streets on the United Way grounds. Yard Sale spaces cost $10 in advance or $15 the day of the event. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be sold too. Please contact Kim Good at 304-340-3636 (Director, Foster Grandparent Program) or Shelia Hauser at 304-340-3524 (Senior Corps Director) for more information.
Last year’s event was a great success; Senior Corps raised almost $1,000 for the Foster Grandparent and Retired & Senior Volunteer Programs. There were 29 yard sale tables that provided a variety of shopping opportunities and an old fashioned ice cream vendor! Volunteers sold hotdogs with home-made chili, chips and sodas to a hungry crowd. For dessert, donated baked goods and fudge sold out quickly.
Proceeds from the event help support the volunteer programs of RSVP and the Foster Grandparent Program. (See Below)
HOT YARD SALE TIPS
- Pricing: Apply large, easy-to-read stickers to each item. Use a ½ or full-sheet of paper to price and label items displayed by groups in boxes, i.e. “TOYS: $2 EACH.”
- Bargaining: Be willing to bargain. The person who asks about an item might be the “only” person who’s willing to buy it on the day of the sale.
- Make it Special: Items should be in working, clean and presentable condition.
- Clothing: Clean, wrinkle-free items on clothes hanger sell the best. No hanging rack? Try a pole hung between 2 chairs (use a little masking or duct tape to secure pole in place)
- Groups: Try packing small items in zip lock bags & sell as a group.
- Neatness Counts: The busiest tables have neat displays and are not overcrowded. Turn a small box over, cover with a piece of cloth and you’ll have an instant platform for display.
- Fun, Fun, Fun: Put a smile on your face and have fun. You may not make a fortune, but chances are you’ll have a pleasant time chatting with fun people.
