Executive producer James Cameron scores another major underwater hit with his latest DVD release Sanctum. This fact based survival adventure boasts stunning visuals, nail biting suspense, and extreme moments of heroism and tragedy. You may pick it up at your Roanoke Valley Public Library.
Richard Roxburgh excels as Frank, the fearless hard driving leader and caving expert of an unparalleled expedition into a massive and mostly unexplored cave in New Guinea. Following one member's tragic death, the rest become trapped by a major storm that quickly begins flooding the cave. With limited supplies and various levels of climbing and diving experience they must venture further into the unknown in hopes of finding an escape route.
All of the actors in this amazing film underwent months of rigorous training in rock climbing and diving, including learning how to use a rebreather. Actors mostly unknown to American audiences actually performing their own dangerous action give the film an incredible sense of realism.
Portions of the movie were shot in real cave locations, but most of what you see comes from the scenic designers. Sanctum features the most beautiful, frightening, and realistic cave sets ever seen on film. Viewers will feel as though they have gone to another world, and in fact they have, though it is right here on our own planet.
Real life cave and underwater explorer and filmmaker Andrew Wight co-wrote the screenplay based on his actual experience in a similar situation that trapped him and fourteen others. Fortunately, his real life story did not take the tragic toll of Sanctum.
Visually spellbinding and frighteningly suspenseful, Sanctum also never forgets the human side of the story. Totally authentic performances from the entire cast reel us in on an emotional level as well. You will feel yourself in the characters’ predicament and wonder how they could allow themselves to be there in the first place.
