The Big Texan and the free 72 oz. steak challenge-slide0

The Big Texan Steakhouse is notorious for it's 72 oz. free steak challenge. Years ago the Big Texan threw down the gauntlet and told customers they could eat for free IF they could complete the 72 oz. steak challenge. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, includes eating shrimp cocktail, baked potato, salad, roll with butter, and of course, the 72 oz. Steak. The challenge must be completed in an hour.

To add a little pressure contestants are seated on a stage in the middle of the restaurant with a countdown clock right above their heads. Steaks are cooked to order and contestants are allowed to cut into the steak and take a bite before the challenge starts to make sure the steak is to their liking.

It's important to note that once the clock is started standing, leaving the table, or having another person touch the meal is against the rules and the challenge will end in disqualification. Other diners, however, can cheer on the contestant and take photos.

If the challenger is unable to complete the meal in an hour the full price of $72 for the meal will be required and leftovers can be taken home.

Not up for the 72 oz. steak challenge? The Big Texan is still a great place to stop for a meal. Offering up delicious burgers and steaks all served by a wait staff decked out in western wear. The Big Texan is a must-stop the next time you are passing through Amarillo.
