One of wheelchair rugby’s premier invitational club tournaments, the Europa Cup got under way on Friday night in Tolouse with some tight and entertaining matches, with Germany’s Rebels and Denmark’s FHI Falcons coming out on top of the standings.
The opening match saw the two French sides doing battle as Stade Tolouse, the hosts, took on the French Select team and it was a thrilling match as players made their cases for being part of the French national team with the Select team doing just enough to overcome Stade Tolouse 45-47 in a thriller.
The second match was not quite as tight as the Rebels completely tore in to the Gunners from the Czech Republic, recording the biggest win of the day as they won easily 61-30.
There was also a blow-out in the third match as the Falcons were able to secure a 62-41 win over the Pusherman from Holland, setting up two clear leaders of the tournament, after the opening set of matches.
Stade bounced back in the second set of matches as they continued the pain for the Gunners, getting 50 past them again, winning 55-36 the lowest score of the day.
The Rebels really looked to show their Europa Cup credentials as they fought hard to get past the French Selection in a 44-55 win.
After a lengthy break the evening session featured two significant matches with the Falcons continuing their title credentials and all but securing a place in the top four as they recorded a victory over the Gunners who were having a bad day on Friday.
The final game saw the hosts in action as they took on the Pushermen and condemned them to the bottom two at the end of Friday but not without a fight as the match went to double overtime before Stade Tolouse broke through for a 56-54 win.
The Europa Cup continues on Saturday and Sunday with all matches being streamed live on the IWRF Website.
