Saluki Dunkeldog, named after brew master Chuck Stuhrenberg’s Alma mater Southern Illinois University’s mascot the Saluki, the second beer in a lineup of many beers released by Big Muddy Brewing Company. A hybrid of a German dunkel lager and American amber ale Dunkeldog is a nice blend and good introduction to a “dark beer” without all the “dark beer” misconceptions.
Dunkeldog pours dark amber with reddish hues. It has a nice white two finger head which leaves beautiful lacing behind. The aroma tempts with swirling notes of caramel and chocolate inviting the drinker to relax and enjoy. It has a rich malty backbone and good mouth feel, but not thick or heavy just enough to let you know that it is a little heartier than your average beer. The caramel and chocolate were not just teasing in the aroma they make an appearance in the flavor as well. Flavors of bitter chocolate and sweet caramel complement each other. With all the sweet flavors of malt and caramel the chocolate bitterness gets a little help from some hop bitterness just to balance it out. The finish is nice and clean not cloying or sticky at all.
Dunkeldog can help rid people of the common assumptions about darker beers. This beer does not have the heavy, thick, bitter, or oil can feel or flavors that are often tied to darker beer. Do your friends a favor remind them that dark is a color not a flavor and pour a Dunkeldog they will probably thank you for it.
