Big Muddy Brewing Company founded in 2009 ended an almost 50 year drought for brewing in Murphysboro, Illinois. Founder and brewmaster Chuck Stuhrenberg, a Southern Illinois University alumnus, turned his hobby into a profession and rebirthed craft brewing in the heartland area.
Big Muddy Brewing now offers over 8 different beers including seasonals. The brewery has grown from its original 3 flagship brews “Kinkaid Wheat”,” Saluki Dunkel Dog”, and “Big Muddy Pale Ale”. Brewing 2 to 3 times a week on the 15bbl brew system keeps up with demands. There is also enough beer and time to run a few special batches such as a fan favorite, seen only at the brew house, “Logans Lager” or an experimental barrel program.
The brewery offers tours on weekends starting at noon and running every hour on the hour until 3pm. The tours are small, friendly, and informal though your questions will be answered by a knowledgeable and personable staff. After the tour you will be invited to taste all the beers on tap and keep the glass. That’s a pretty good deal for only $6.00.
Big Muddy is fast growing, turning into a local favorite and spreading throughout the area. Big Muddy brews can be found in the tri-state area of Illinois, Kentucky, and Missouri and also in New Jersey. Finding some Big Muddy brews shouldn’t be a problem at places like Roof Brothers, Wagner Wine and Spirits, or anywhere else good craft beer is sold. Next time you’re out for a weekend drive stop by for a brewery tour, taste some good Big Muddy beers, enjoy some good company and maybe take a growler of this piece of modern history home.
