Kinkaid Wheat, the first beer offered by Big Muddy Brewing Company, is the cornerstone of this Southern Illinois brewery and the reemergence of craft beer in Murphysboro, Il and the tri-state area. Being released in an area dominated by light American lagers Kinkaid Wheat was a wise choice by founder and brew master Chuck Stuhrenberg.
Kinkaid Wheat pours straw yellow with a thin head. The beer is only slightly cloudy no overdoing it on the wheat haze. The beer has a nice malty aroma with hints of spice and graininess to it but not so off putting as to be considered perfumy. For a light American wheat beer this beer has allot to offer in flavors without being overwhelming. It has a nice light bready flavor which plays nicely with the spicy tart flavors of the wheat. The delicate bitterness from the German hops are not over the top but just enough to balance out the malt backbone. This beer finishes clean and crisp, a perfect summer day or every day beer.
Kinkaid Wheat is complex enough to make a craft beer drinker slow down and enjoy it noticing the different spicy bready notes of this American wheat beer, while it also is simple enough to be enjoyed by your typical light lager drinker. The perfect flagship beer for Big Muddy Brewing to reintroduce craft beer to the heartland area Kinkaid Wheat hits the mark.
