Big movie weekend at Zeitgeist kicks off Thursday with ‘Weird World of Blowfly’

Looking for some fun this weekend? How about some X-rated rap, staring up at the nighttime sky, or starting a prison uprising? Well if any of those options tickle your fancy, then you are in luck because Zeitgeist has got you covered with three new films screening exclusively at the Center this weekend.

A new documentary gives audiences the chance to peer inside The Weird World of Blowfly, a funk-soul-X-rated rap alter ego of musician Clarence Reid.

Clarence Reid is a musician who wrote and produced romantic and spiritual songs for some of the greatest Southern soul and R&B acts of the 1960s and '70s. He is also the gonzo performer Blowfly, Clarence's freaky alter ego and the original X-rated rapper. Now 69-years-old, with a gold-spangled superhero costume and a catalog of the world's raunchiest tunes, Blowfly tours the world, still struggling for success and recognition after 50 years of making music.

Shot over the course of two years, the film follows Clarence at home and around the world, featuring dozens of classic Blowfly songs as well as new hits. A revealing portrait of an unheralded man, it celebrates his musical and cultural significance as a rapper and soul music legend.

Two other films join the Zeitgeist daily lineup starting Friday – a new documentary and a Norwegian prison drama.

First up, The City Dark, a documentary which asks a simple question - do we need the stars?

Exploring the threat of killer asteroids in Hawaii, tracking hatching turtles along the Florida coast, and rescuing injured birds on Chicago streets, filmmaker Ian Cheney unravels the myriad implications of a globe glittering with lights. Featuring stunning astrophotography and a cast of eclectic scientists, The City Dark is the definitive story of light pollution and the disappearing stars.

The City Dark screens at 6 pm nightly through next week (except Monday).

Also starting Friday is King of Devil’s Island, a true story of an uprising at a boys’ reform home.

Norwegian winter, early 20th century. On the boys home Bastoy, a new inmate leads the boys to a violent uprising against a brutal regime. Refusing to accept the constant abuse, a courageous and vicious rebellion breaks out that will bring them head to head with no less than the Norwegian Army.
