The Big East breakup has gone full speed ahead. One the breakup of the old Big East conference has been completed, the seven catholic schools splitting off will be joined by Xavier and Butler. According to a report from ESPN on Thursday (Feb. 28), Creighton could become the tenth school to join the new conference that will also be called the Big East.
The new conference will have DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, and Villanova as the first seven schools. While Xavier and Butler also want to be in the mix according to this report, the two schools still have to withdraw from the Atlantic 10 conference before they can move on. The process to leave the A-10 will include each school paying a $2 million fee.
Many college basketball fans may get confused that so many Big East schools are leaving one conference to join another one that will be called the exact same thing. This is the politic of college athletics coming up once again, but the new conference could certainly be in line for a huge media-rights deal. With schools like Georgetown in the mix, there will be networks lining up to cover it.
The Big East breakup will likely result in Notre Dame joining the ACC a year early as well. The expectation now is that the Catholic 7 schools will begin the new league on July 1.
