So often we see programs and commercials on television depicting tragedies, injustices, and visions of millions of animals left homeless each year. Our first mental response is, "That's terrible, someone should do something about that!' Did we ever stop to think we should be that person?
The caring staff and numerous volunteers and fosters at Big Dog Rescue Ranch decided they were all going to be "that person."
Big Dog Ranch Rescue is a unique dog rescue shelter situated on 28 acres in Wellington, Florida. The mission of Big Dog Ranch Rescue is to provide shelter, care and affection to homeless and unwanted dogs of all breeds and to adopt them out to loving human companions. In support of those objectives, they also promote animal welfare and celebrate the special bond between dogs and people through education, awareness and community outreach.
Although they spend the majority of their time and efforts working with displaced dogs, their goal is to keep as many dogs as possible out the of the rescue shelter. They counsel dog owners who contact them erroneously thinking they are doing their dog a favor by rehoming him/her to a home that has more time or can give them the home they deserve. In actuality most dogs are better off remaining in the home they know and love. Of course this applies to dogs that are being properly cared for and whose basic needs are consistently met.
Big Dog Ranch Rescue will offer a myriad of solutions to the most common excuses for having to give up a pet. These include; moving, I don't have time, behavioral issues, financial issues etc. They will also provide a list of services for persons experiencing financial difficulties.
Although they have had success in keeping dogs with their original owners, they still have many dogs in their facility needing adoption.
Zoey, a spayed female Retriever/Labrador mix is 5 years/7 months old. She was rescued along with her puppies all of whom were adopted long ago. Zoey is still waiting for her chance to go to a forever home.
Dakota, a female spayed Viszla/Smooth Haired/Weimaraner mix is 6 years/4 months old. She is currently being fostered in Orlando but needs a permanent placement. Dakota was an owner surrender due to her owner having to move to Arizona to care for her ailing father. She suffers from Addison's Disease but fortunately it is under control.
These are just two of the many dogs needing help, and more and more are coming in each day. Big Dog Ranch Rescue is always looking for volunteers 18 years or older to help out as well as financial donors and sponsors to keep the ranch and its mission alive.
